Renee's Side | Steve's Side |
Upon walking into the 128, I am reminded of walking into a church basement for a fish fry. The decor and atmosphere is not what you come to the 128 for. It is cozy, but it is a basement of a building cozy, which some (like Steve) get into much more than others. However, the surroundings aside, this is a great place for food. The Spring Rolls were a wonderful combination of shrimp and vegetables all wrapped up in a attractive manner, with a great dipping sauce. I could have eaten a whole meal of them and been intensely satisfied. The caesar salad which was good, was nothing too spectacular. But the ribs. I don't like ribs, never have. Since I have eaten them as a child, I have never appreciated the chore of getting very little meat off a big pile of bones and most of that meat is fat. Ick. But, for some reason I was in the mood for meat, and not steak, and I chose the ribs. Steve gets ribs once in awhile so even though I never have ordered them in a restaurant I have tasted many ribs. Most of which I could do without. But these, these were something different. Perhaps it was the close to amazing sauce, perhaps it was the particular cut of ribs I had, I am not sure. But if (when) I go back to the 128 I will probably order the ribs. The dessert was good as well, again a very nice brownie with very nice ice cream. Overall, I would go back probably once a year. Which is a lot considering we try to go to new places as much as possible. If I lived in the area, I would probably be there much more often. And more than likely eating ribs. |
For what 128 Cafe lacks in ambiance, it makes up in charm. It's charming to think that you could open a restaurant on the ground floor of an apartment building or older house, hire some good chefs and servers, and entertain the patrons. Of course there is more to it than that, owning a restaurant. But somehow, 128 Cafe makes it seem easy. The guests make reservations, arrive on time, enjoy good food and drink and leave satisfied. With some restaurants, you feel like they're charging a lot because they can. At 128 Cafe, they charge what they should be charging a market rate, but no more. The spring rolls with shrimp were delightful, the caesar salad was palatable, and the swordfish was absolutely delicious. We finished by sharing a brownie ice cream dessert that rounded out a wonderful meal. I would love to go back to 128 Cafe. |
