I really wanted to love this restaurant. Another seafood option is in my opinion can never be a bad thing.

The food was good, some was even great. The crabcakes were about as good as I have had. They had hazelnuts in them and some other spicing that made them unusual, but very good. They were priced a bit high, but we were in Wayzata. The salad was nothing too special for what it was and the price. The Wahoo was fine as well, the sauce and potatoes were great. The cake was actually one of the best I have had and the price was not that bad.

The service was good, a very nice waitress (probably a bit too nice for the clientele). They had parking. They are in the downtown Wayzata area which is fairly pleasant.

So what was it that I didn't like? Well...I have been to many restaurants in my time, and I don't think I have witnessed so many clientele who were simply rude. Of course, no one was rude to me. And I realize it could have just have been the night and the particular people that we were seated near, but of the five tables that I could observe, three of them treated the waitress and other employees poorly. I am also aware that I was probably in the company of CEOs and Presidents of companies, but I am sure that I have been in the company of them before at many other restaurants.

I know that many waitress and waiters out there will tell me being treated badly is nothing new. I know I did some time as a bus girl. But there was something about the attitude with which it was done, as if they were entitled to treat people poorly. Not only did I witness poor treatment of personnel, I also witnessed something I have never seen before at a restaurant. A foursome was playing Bridge. At first, I thought this was rather amusing, but something bugged me about it and it wasn't until later when I sat down to begin reviewing the restaurant that I realized it was another sign of disrespect.

This was a difficult review, because the restaurant itself did nothing wrong, but none the less, when I am in the mood for expensive seafood, I will go to Downtown Minneapolis and Oceanaire.

  • Yellow Tail Snapper with Shrimp Etouffe $24.00

What was it about Blue Point that I didn’t like? Nothing in particular. The crab cakes and the yellow tail snapper might have been overpriced. The salad might have been too ordinary: good greens with simple vinaigrette. The patrons might be too pretentious.

Otherwise, Blue Point reminded me of Oceanaire: the golden oldies, the wait staff in white jackets, and the elegant decor. The comparison doesn’t stop there. They have great fresh seafood: the crab cakes were good, all three rock shrimp on the salad were divine, and my yellow tail snapper was delicious in its semolina crust. Two differences I noticed: Oceanaire’s menu had more variety, especially fresh fish, and Oceanaire had more wait staff. I also think the appetizers and salads are better at Oceanaire.

What would I recommend? If you live in the western suburbs, the drive to Wayzata might be easier. But I still prefer the wider selection of seafood and slightly better preparation at Oceanaire.
