  • Appetizer Sampler (potato flautas, buffalo chicken wings, calamari $15.95 (shared)
  • Onion Rings $4.95 (shared)
  • Catfish in Tortilla Crust $12.95
  • Mud Slide $5.00 (shared)

We went to this very popular uptown restaurant with my sister and her boyfriend. They are know for their margaritas, which they have many varieties of, I had one and it was good.

And that is about the story of this restaurant -- everything was good. They are not trying to do anything to fancy, they are just serving good food and good drinks to a trendy crowd.

The appetizers were all very good, the buffalo wings being my least favorite, but I really do not like them to begin with. The onion rings were very addicting (enough for four people), I could have easily ate the whole plate my self and I think I almost did. The Catfish was great, well prepared. The Mud Slide was a little disappointing, they said it was served in a shovel that you can keep, but they had run out of shovels when we were there. Probably not really a big deal, but if you advertise, you should make sure you have them. (A friend of mine went there a couple of weeks later and they were out of shovels still or again.) Otherwise it was a great dessert and enough for six to eight people (maybe they gave us more to make up for the shovel though).

Overall, I would recommend this place. I think it would be a great place for happy hour especially.

  • Tofu Fajitas $12.95

Trendy. Trendy. Trendy. Trendy describes Bar Abilene, where plenty of beautiful people meet for food and drinks. The Southwestern decor is attractive, though the tile floor makes the restaurant somewhat loud. With the pleasant decor, large portions, and appetizing menu, this restaurant seems ripe to become a chain. This formula should work well in almost any suburb, especially given Americans' acceptance of Southwestern and Mexican food.

The appetizer sampler was enough for four people, which we had this Saturday. Of the appetizers, the potato flautas stood out, whereas the chicken wings were not impressive. Part of that judgment is based on the wide availability of chicken wings, and many places serve excellent wings.

What you don't find everywhere is tofu fajitas. When I asked our server about tofu fajitas, she responded that they were good and they were on the menu to serve the vegetarian population in the area. Looking to try something new, I was duly impressed; the tofu was grilled and it was well-suited as fajita filling. If you would like to try tofu for the first time, I would recommend Bar Abilene's tofu fajitas to you.

The onion rings were fabulous. At $4.95, the mound of onion rings make a great value, especially when split among four people. Be careful, though, because the portion is huge.

Finally, the mud slide was very good. But I was disappointed that the restaurant ran out of shovels for us to take home.
