Black Sheep is the new kid on the pizza scene and their claim is coal fired pizza. It is currently a very popular place, so I would suggest getting there early or being prepared to wait a bit. We got there at a bit after 5 on a Sunday and it was already over 1/2 full and by the time we left it was full. Great to see!

I am not sure I can tell coal fired from the wood fired pizza, but it was very good, comparable with Pizza Nea and Punch. I still like Pizza Nea best, but clearly that is a controversial topic. Although I will say their fennel sausage was the best sausage I have ever had on a pizza. Thus the sausage side of the pizza was amazing and the meatball side was just good for me. I thought it was a bit bland. But the crust was great, we were happy, our son was happy...loves of his first words, yes I know this should be embarrassing and it is, but nonetheless. I would put Black Sheep on a tour of the best pizza in the city.

Black Sheep is really good pizza and worth adding to your tour of Mpls-St Paul pizza places. Their hook is coal-fired pizza. I donít really buy into it being all that different from the wood-fired pizzas that have become popular over the past two decades. The end goal is a great crust, and coal-fired delivers a great crust. Black Sheep adds some high quality, delicious toppings in innovative combinations. And voila, you have a great pizza.

If you go, check out their menu on line so youíre prepared in advance. This isnít your standard toppings pizza place, even though they have most standard toppings. Youíll want to make sure youíre okay trying something different in pizza that night to truly appreciate the pizza. But then again, they have Surly and 1919 Root Beer on tap, so that should sooth most ruffled edges.

If you go, their seating is somewhat limited and nothing suggests that they take reservations, so I would recommend going at an off-hour. There is ample street parking available, although you may have to plug a meter and play real-life Frogger across Washington Avenue, which isnít too busy in front of Black Sheep. Black Sheep doesnít have the location to compete with Pizza Luce downtown, but they have good pizza and they will do fine in the North Loop neighborhood.
