This was our first night out without our child, so I may review it a bit more positive than otherwise. We love our child, but it really was nice to have a night out without him. This was also our 400th restaurant which I did not know until we sat down to talk about the review. At first I was a bit peeved that Steve did not mention this earlier, we could have chosen a "special" restaurant since it was a milestone. But in the end I am glad we went here, because this is the kind of restaurant that every neighborhood should have. Of course, it does seem that this neighborhood has a slightly unfair number of them. While we did not bring our child, we certainly could have, they were well equipped with a kid's menu and there were actually a few children there while we ate. Although by the time we left at 9 or so it was only adults. I really enjoyed the appetizer. The cut the calamari in strips and not rings and perhaps a bit thicker which made a bit chewy, but in a good way. The accompanying dipping sauces were fresh and tasty. My salmon was very nice, it was served on a cauliflower "risotto" which contained no rice that I could see. I really enjoyed it and need to figure out how to make it. The salmon itself was very nice. The dessert was good, nothing spectacular, but for the price a nice ending to our meal. This is really a nice neighborhood restaurant, I would highly recommend it to anyone in the area, I am not sure it worth a drive across town.

So this is number 400. We did not visit Café 28 with our son, but we noticed that several families were there finishing dinner as we arrived. So, along with a kid’s menu and the necessary accoutrements, this looks like a good place to go with children. The server was not bright and chipper, but he did his job well. Café 28 is more like a good neighborhood restaurant with affordable prices than high-end, upscale dining. Café 28 offers several menu items that are sourced (like grass fed beef from Thousand Hills Farm). We started with the calamari. The larger, straight pieces of calamari and two dipping sauces made this better than average calamari and worth trying. Both were good, but I especially liked the sweet and sour salsa. The adobo pork was also very good. The server said you can never go wrong with this dish at Café 28, and it must have been one of his favorites. I liked the flavors of the pork, and it was just the right amount of spiciness for me (at or above medium-hot without losing other flavors). The portion size was generous, but I couldn’t help thinking that you could find a similar version of this at a local Mexican restaurant a few dollars cheaper. I liked the chocolate cake and ice cream. I know that Renee often uses her own talented cooking skills as a barometer, but at the price, this was a good choice for dessert. While I wouldn’t go out of the way for it, Café 28 makes a good neighborhood restaurant worth trying in a neighborhood full of good restaurants. |
