  • Winter Spring Rolls $6 (shared)
  • Green Curry with Tofu $9

Cafe BonXai is great gem in the midway area. Unfortunately it was all but empty when we arrived during prime time on Saturday night, so hopefully it was just a bad night and/or they do a great lunch business.

The spring rolls where awesome, the peanut sauce served with them was so good our child used it to dip his entire meal in. The green curry was great, I think almost as good as I have had. I still have to give the best green curry to Lemon Grass, but I really liked this version as well. I ordered it medium hot and that was about right to share with our child. However if by myself I would order it a bit more spicy.

Overall, I have a new favorite restaurant in this area of the city. I am not sure it is worth a drive across town, but if you even within the general area, it is worth a stop to check it out.

  • Hmong Sausage Penne $12

I can't say that this was the best Asian we've had. It's really good, but it doesn't quite evoke memories of "I'd go back there in a heartbeat." It will go on my top Asian fusion restaurants, because it belongs there. This is a place that I'd like to go back and try a different entree off the menu.

The winter spring rolls were fantastic. They were filled with pork, shrimp, noodles, carrots and parsley as you would expect. What you might not expect were two fabulous dipping sauces, one peanut and another basic sauce. The larger portion size (4 rolls) and the great flavors justified the higher price for spring rolls.

I was not as impressed with the Hmong Sausage Penne. Renee told me that others had raved about it online, but to me it was pretty mainstream. The sausage was really good, spicy and a generous portion. The penne pasta was basic, and the sauce was basic. It really reminded me more of Italian-American than Asian fusion. The price was low, which works in its favor. But if we go back, I would like to try something else that they likely do better.

On the kid's menu, the grilled cheese sandwich was basic, but the accompanying fries were great. We even saved the peanut sauce from the spring rolls that made a good dipping sauce for the fries.

If you go, they have a parking lot in back. The restaurant was not all that busy when we went on a Saturday night, but Asian restaurants probably are not as busy on average in December. I hope that they do better on weekday lunches. Service was good.
