Oh, where was ChinDian when we lived in that neighborhood? This is a great addition to the SE/U of MN neighborhood. They are keeping their prices fair and the food is very tasty.

I thought the steam dumplings were good, nothing too amazing, but solid. I really liked my shitake and tofu dish. It had great flavor and the tofu was crispy. I was very disappointed when I went to the fridge for the left overs and found that Steve had eaten them. But I can not hold that against the restaurant.

I think if you are in the area, maybe on the way to game or event at the U this is a great place to stop to eat.



  • Kwe Tieu Goreng (Malaysian) Stir fried wide rice noodle, beans sprout, shrimp, fried tofu, and egg. $9.95

On our visit to ChinDian Café, I really loved the Malaysian dish, Kwe Tieu Goreng, but don’t ask me to pronounce it. Our waiter recommended this as the best of their Malaysian entrees, and I’m glad I asked. The flavors were bright and distinct. The tofu was delicious, and the shrimp added another layer of texture, flavor, and protein. The real star may be the wide rice noodles that taste homemade. I ordered the dish at medium spiciness to make it easier to share with our son. Medium was a little bland compared to what I would normally order, but the dish still had some subdued kick to it. The steamed dumplings were good, standard dumplings. On our next visit, I would like to try their spring rolls.

On our visit, co-owner Nina Wong visited our table and talked for a while. They also seemed to know another regular at the counter seating. It was not busy, but we still find this a great gesture to make you feel welcome at a restaurant. It adds so much to the atmosphere to meet the chefs or owners, whether it is fine dining, upscale, midscale, neighborhood, or bar & grill. Sure, maybe there is a reason they’re in the kitchen; but if you have outgoing kitchen staff, it’s great to see them working the floor.
