I had a hard time telling from the website if Citizen Cafe was going to be kid friendly or not. But in our case, early dinner (5pm), child on pretty good behavior, and waitress aware of serving us quick, things worked out for us. It is fairly small, so if you had a really wild child and decided to eat at a later hour things may not work out as well for you.

I really liked citizen cafe the food was well priced and excellent. The space is a nice casual and welcoming atmosphere. It is a great neighborhood restaurant.

The logo and the web site are reminiscent of communism, a sort of spoon and sickle. The interior artwork is 40’s-50’s cold war, and the white tablecloths are covered with comrade brown paper. Of course, this was perfect for coloring. Even the crayons were not the individually packaged set of red-green-yellow-blue of most chain restaurants, but a small bucket of everyday colors. We contributed our red-green-yellow-blue set from our travel bag for the next family to enjoy.

The restaurant’s concept is good food at good prices. The food is capitalist quality, though, well above mediocre socialist standards. The web site pronounces that Citizen Cafe prepares honest food utilizing locally sourced products. The bread was certainly good, two varieties with creamery butter and a chickpea spread. We had a cheese plate of baked goat cheese and toasted bread that was very good. Even though the recipe was basic, the goat cheese was high quality and tasty.

The portion size of the braised beef short rib and Amish chicken drummie was tremendous. The short rib had to be a pound of meat alone, and a full chicken drumstick make it a meat-lover’s meal. The short rib was juicy, a little fatty, but flavorful. The chicken drummie had a sweet and tangy sauce that made it delicious. The mashed potatoes on the side were authentic, but basic. Roasted carrots and cauliflower were very nicely done and tasty. This was a real meat-and-potatoes meal. Citizen Cafe has good prices and is a good neighborhood place to try if you are nearby, but it is nothing groundbreaking.
