  • Calamari $7.50 (shared)
  • Caesar Salad $1.95
  • Turkey Medallions, Mashed Potatoes and Hash $14.95

Places with a view. The Dock Cafe has that without a doubt. As we came in there were people who were willing to wait 25 minutes for a table by the window. If you wanted a table somewhere else you could get right in. Of course with a window you get the beautiful St. Croix. As we sat down and my martini was served, I began to wonder if that is all there was to this restaurant - a view.

The martini was strong, but not very smooth. We ordered calamari for an appetizer and it was greasy and chewy. The salad was not that great wither. I was getting ready to write the restaurant off as a good location and great view, but nothing else when the entree came out.

I ordered the special, which was Turkey Medallions with mashed potatoes and fall vegetable hash. All of the components were wonderful. The turkey was juicy and nicely spiced. The potatoes were wonderful and the hash was amazing. So go to the dock cafe is you want a great view that you are willing to wait for and a good entree.

  • Butternut Squash Soup $3.25
  • Shrimp Diablo - Fusili, Shrimp, Roasted Red Peppers, Creamy Cajun Sauce $13.95

This Stillwater restaurant has a lot going for it: an excellent view of the St. Croix River, outdoor dining, and a location in trendy stillwater. But it still earned a fair rating.

It wasn't the service. The wait staff was prompt, attentive and friendly. It obviously wasn't the ambiance. They have a modern building in a great setting. It was the food.

The fried Calamari appetizer was down right greasy. And it was chewy. Renee mentioned that she had much better calamari at Chino Latino a few weeks earlier. It was calamari that was tasty, but not chewy.

The Butternut Squash Soup was also greasy. It must have been the stock that made it that way. The soup had a sweet flavor without any layers that I was hoping for.

The Diablo Shrimp, on the other hand, was quite good. It was fusili pasta in a spicy Cajun cream sauce. The sauce made the dish: it was balanced and was perfectly spicy. All the ingredients were blended together make a good dish. This might be one to try at home.

I can't recommend the restaurant based only on the pasta. A restaurant has to have consistently good food, and the Dock Cafe fell short.
