It is a great little drive to city of Dundas which is right by Northfield. We have friends who live in Northfield and we joined them for dinner here. So of course the evening had a head start on its way to excellent since we were dining with good company. Fortunately the restaurant was as good as the company. From the outside it does not look like much, but inside it is nicely decorated and is warm and cozy even on a snowy winter night. One thing they do that is unique is they have wine flights and not just a white or red wine flight, but a wine flight in almost every variety of wine they carry, which is nice and they give suggestions as to what wine flight you might want to try with each entree as well. The food was very good. We tried two appetizers and each one they portioned for us into four pieces for our group, a small touch, but very nice. The crab cakes were good, they could hold there own with most in the city. The cheese plateshowcased cheese from Shepherd's Way Farm in Nerstrand which is a nearby community. For the entree I had wild boar which was a first for me, it was excellent, of course I have nothing to really compare it to, but I would definitely order it again. The dessert sampler was fun and it provided a small piece of each of the desserts they were serving that evening. While, it is a bit of drive, it was worth it. And if you are in the area, I would highly recommend trying it out. |
We had a great meal at Fermentations. Almost everything was standard, on the safe side, but excellent nonetheless. Fermentations is an excellent restaurant for the small town of Dundas, about 40 miles south of the Twin Cities. We really appreciated the little touches at Fermentations. We enjoyed dinner with another couple and the restaurant served the crab cakes and cheese plate in smaller portions to spread across the entire party. The cheese plate featured sheep cheeses from Shepherd's Way Farm, which recently suffered an arson attack. The cheeses we had were excellent and matched some of the best cheese plates we’ve had. I still have a penchant for European cheeses, but I look forward to Shepherd's Way Farm’s revival and other excellent American cheeses coming to the fore. I also really liked the wine flights. With over fifteen wine flights, there are plenty of options to meet your taste. The only downside: the server should give the table both the wine menu and the food menu at the same time, because the food menu included several wine pairing suggestions. It was also disappointing to Renee and the others because they might have ordered different wine. Me, I luckily chose the Zinfandel flight which went superbly with the lasagna. But I love lasagna, and I loved Fermentations’ lasagna. It wasn’t ricotta or cottage cheese, which Renee liked, and still everything went together well. Even the lamb was a great non-traditional lasagna choice. Kudos to Fermentations for taking chances with the entrees. The dessert, a sampler plate, was back to the safe side, except for the merlot ice cream, which I disliked. We’ve also had better chocolate cake and better cheese cake. In short, the desserts need improvement, but that didn’t take away from an overall excellent experience. |
