  • Cranberry Puffer - Cream cheese, curry, dried cranberries and scallions $4.50
  • Nutty Chicken - Chicken white meat, cashew nuts, peanuts, water chestnuts, almond, onions garnished with green scallion $8.99

For the eat street area this was not a great restaurant. Nothing was terrible, but it was simply not great.

The cranberry puffers tasted basically like the cream cheese one, in fact if it were not for the red color of the filling I would have questioned the cranberry. My entree was fine for what it was, but the sauce was very basic.

Considering the area, I would simply skip it and go a bit further down the street to many other really good Asian restaurants.

  • Vietnamese Curry Coconut with Shrimp - Choice of meat marinated with Vietnamese spices, curry, coconut milk, onions, and topped with crushed peanuts, served over a bed of lettuce, bean sprouts $11.99

Gangchen serves average food at below-average prices. We had the cranberry puffer, which was six pieces of cream cheese wontons with cranberries. I give them credit for trying a good variation on this traditional appetizer. The accompanying normal sweet and sour sauce was predictable, bland, and disappointing because they put so much thought into the cream cheese puffs that they should have created its own dipping sauce. Ultimately, the appetizer is about quantity over quality, which is rarely a winning formula in our book.

The Vietnamese Curry Coconut was good, not great, and not as good as other curries we have had (check out Peninsula, True Thai, or Lemon Grass Thai). The shrimp was okay, not great. Overall, the entrée was a decent dish, but not anything that will vault the restaurant to my top Asian restaurants. We had a decent meal at Gangchen, but nothing spectacular, and ultimately we had to swing to fair based on the average food and the abundance of great Asian restaurants nearby.
