I was not terribly impressed with Gandhi Mahal, I really wanted to be and I was looking forward to Indian food, but in the end, I left slightly disappointed. Partly it could have been the website which proclaims they are "dedicated to bringing peace by pleasing the palate". That is a pretty big statement so my expectations were high going in.
It is not that anything was bad, it just was not amazing or even really good. The samosa was dry, like it had been cooked too long or maybe was reheated. I really love samosas, or really any kind of dumpling/dough type of appetizer so this was disappointing. My dish was ok, the sauce was good, had a nice heat to it. The potatoe/paneer balls were really soft and had a texture almost the same as the sauce, I expected them to be a bit more firm and contrasting. The garlic naan was good. Our son loved the papadum that we got. He also loved the mango lassi, in fact watching him drink it was a bit like watching a druggie getting an amazing high.
We live close to Nala Pak, so there would not reason for me to venture to Gandhi Mahal again.
As Indian restaurants go, Gandhi Mahal is a mixed bag. They do some of the little things right, but others slipped. The slips – the samosas were lifeless, seemingly reheated, and Renee’s entrée was pretty bland. I liked my mixed grill for the variety of meat, but it really wasn’t all that unique or spiced all that well. I was surprised when it arrived on a sizzling plate, which may have contributed to the chicken and shrimp being overcooked. The little things they do right – the complimentary papadam served before the appetizer was very good and served with some great sauces. The mango lassi was fantastic and a real hit with our son, who was particularly cranky the night we were there. The garlic naan was also great. So, all in all, the restaurant didn’t measure up to other, better Indian restaurants we’ve been to.
