This was easily the most disappointing restaurant in a year or more. The service was friendly enough and the dessert not too bad, but beyond that it was not good. They try to be an old time supper club and the décor and such actually works quite well for it. However the prices are a bit on the high end for this type of place and considering that everything was close to inedible, all the more so. We started with the baked brie, which should be pretty simple to execute. The presentation was very nice, but the taste was terrible, the brie was not even melty and it was clearly not a great piece of brie. The sauces which were basically variations of pepper jellies were fine, but nothing spectacular. The garlic toast served to spread it on, was way too salty and tasted like garlic salt on toast, which is probably what it was. I had the spinach salad and walleye/crab cake for my entrée. The spinach salad was average at best. The walleye/crab cake was one of the worst walleye or crab cakes I have had. The dessert was actually not too bad; it was easily the highlight of the meal. Even though this is downtown St. Paul and not downtown Minneapolis, there are still many other better choices for basically the same price or even a bit cheaper. |
The people who work at Matty B's are really nice. It's just that the food is so, well, bad. The baked brie was below average brie in a phyllo dough on top of three pepper jellies that tasted alike. The brie should be soft and melted when it gets to the table, which it wasn't. The meatloaf, a featured entrée, came out like the consistency of a hockey puck and didn't taste much better. It was an oversalted waste of presumably good angus beef. On the night we visited, there were several orders of meatloaf coming out of the kitchen, but I can only imagine if other diners share my opinion. The garlic smashed potatoes were not garlic enough for my taste, and they could be anybody's everyday mashed potatoes. While the wild rice soup and the Mississippi mud cake were good, they were not enough to save the sinking ship. |
