Maya Cuisine is in the old Bombay Deli spot and I really thought no place could be as good as they were. Well Maya is at least equal. I will have to go back a few more times to see if surpasses which would be hard to do, but from one trip I am impressed. I had the Maya Torta which is a vegetarian torta and if you did not know that I would bet most people would not even notice or care. It was really good. Also the Tamale was fantastic. After I got home and looked at their menu more closely, I found they have some dessert tamales that I clearly missed, but next time.
Maya Cuisine is really, really good. It's another one of the local places that I prefer over the commercialized Chipotle and Rusty Taco (even though they have their place too). The food is authentic, made to order, yet reasonably priced. The quesadillas are quite good and very fresh. Preparation time is a little longer than the production line at Chipotle, but that's okay, too.
The ambiance is clean, but a little sterile with linoleum floors and basic artwork on the walls. Of course, when one of our little darlings dropped a styrofoam cup and the bottom of the cup tore open, splattering pop on the floor, I was grateful for the linoleum floors. The staff was very gracious and cleaned the spill thoroughly.
Street parking, although available, seems chaotic in and around Maya Cuisine. Be patient and try to park on the west side of Central Avenue so you don't have to cross the street. Go around the block if you need to. Really, just be patient.
Update: we have been back for lunch and the Maya Torta is out of this world and the burritos are fantastic, too.
