A Russian restaurant, pretty unique in the metro area and for that alone it is probably worth going here. They have a list of vodkas, like most restaurants have a list of wine. So I thought why not a shot of vodka? I picked their house variety. Now for a confession...I have never done a shot before. It just has never seemed necessary, but here it did and it was expected to be done in one gulp. I was a little nervous about this, Steve may have been even more nervous since he was right across from me. But everything went well. The vodka was very smooth and went down well and warmed me right up.
The Perogi's were good, not quite like others I have had. Most I have had have been boiled these were baked and had a puff pastry type of outside. The salad was very good, but it was very rich and I could only eat a few spoons of it, before I was full.
The walleye intrigued me, I had never thought of Russia and Walleye and then Steve reminded me that Russia has the largest freshwater lake in the world, by volume or something, I was having difficulty paying attention, because the vodka was kicking in. Anyway I was not as fond of this walleye preparation as others I have had. The walleye was coated and fried and then it was covered in a sauce. The sauce tasted great, but you literally could not see the walleye because the sauce was pooled around it. This made the crispy coating wet and limp. It tasted ok, it just wasn't great.
This seems to be a place to go in large groups, although it is not a particularly large restaurant. And when the roaming accordion man began to play, he was unable to roam at all. But it was fun to have accordion music anyway. Overall, the restaurant was good, but living in NE Mpls, I have a large number of east european type of places to eat and would not feel the need to drive to St. Paul for this one.
Moscow on the Hill is located on Cathedral Hill; itís on Selby Avenue across from W.A. Frost. It, too, gets crowded. They donít take reservations for parties under six (the restaurant is too small). So we arrived at 6 p.m., shortly after the restaurant opened at 5:30 p.m. By the time we finished, the restaurant was full.
We started with two orders of pirogis, one beef and one potato-mushroom. The buttery, flaky crust was fabulous. The filling was very good, and it was served with a side of red pickled cabbage. Not only colorful, the pickled cabbage complemented the pirogis very well.
Then I went on to have the Borscht. It, too, was out of this world. It was reasonably priced, and it was outstanding. I would highly recommend the soup to anyone.
Then I had the Peasant Pelmini. If you have read other reviews, you can probably guess that it is some sort of a pasta dish. In fact the peasant pelmini was meat dumplings topped with mushroom sauce and cheese and broiled. The meat tasted like a spicy pork, which stood out against the plain cheese. My mouth is watering just thinking about the meal. Once again, this course was reasonably priced for a trendy restaurant on St. Paulís Cathedral Hill. I would go back, but Renee probably wouldnít based on her dislike for the salad and the mediocre walleye. Oh well, thereís plenty of other restaurants to visit in the Twin Cities.
