Nonna Rosa's was better than I expected. It was a little warm where we sat, but that aside, we had a great experience.
The mussels were served spicy and they were actually spicy which was awesome. My walleye was perfectly done and a great sauce to accompany it. The bread was a little dry and the dessert was forgettable.
I don't think I would go back, however if I lived in the neighborhood, I might check it out from time to time.
I remember Nonna Rosa as the quintessential Italian restaurant. Chef Francesco works hard in the kitchen. He sweats, you can see him sweat, he lets you see him sweat, and the sweat connects you to the chef. But it is a family restaurant and you always wonder how long it can last.
The Canelloni al Forno is described as ground beef, pork and lamb stuffed tube noodles baked with three cheeses and topped with a rosa sauce. The meat is not as tender and flavorful as you want it to be, but the rosa sauce is exquisite. The noodles are good but not great. Altogether it's good, and good enough to make you come back, but you want to come back for their meat dishes that look like works of art or a different pasta dish. You want it to be better. But it's good, and good is good.
