Peking Garden is a popular University restaurant. It certainly was fairly busy when we got there on a Sunday evening.
We started with the pot stickers, which were not terrible, but far from the best in the city. The skins were very chewy, much like leftover ones are when you reheat them and the filling nondescript. I had the jumbo salt and pepper shrimp which they had on the special board, they also have normal sized ones on the regular menu. The shrimp were excellent, done to the exact right doneness and very tasty.
Steve's entree was entirely different matter. I had just a couple of bites of it on Sunday and thought it was average, on Monday I had the leftovers for dinner and I honestly could not eat it, because every piece of chicken was grisly or fatty, it was terrible. I am not sure how he got as much down as he did.
I was disappointed with Peking Garden. The decor is nondescript: a large rectangular room filled with tables where you can see everyone in the restaurant. I can understand that they probably don't want to spend much on fixed assets in Dinkytown, but they could do a lot more with the space they've got.
The pot stickers were dry and tasted stale to me. These are the worst pot stickers I have ever had.
The serving of Kao Pung Chicken was enormous, but the quality was below average. The sauce did not add anything. The chicken was a mix of high and low quality pieces. The vegetables were average. The dish wasn't nearly spicy enough. Maybe college students will go here for Chinese food, but there are so many other good choices nearby (Shuang Cheng) that I can't recommend Peking Garden.
