Q Fanatic is a long drive for us city dwellers, but I think it may be worth it. I had the pulled chicken which I thought was really good, but for me the sides are what really shined. Everything I tried was great, my corn fritters were nice and light. The mac and cheese was very tasty. The beans, the potatoes all good. The good thing is people know it so hopefully they will have no problem staying in business.
I was very happily surprised with Q Fanatic. It's in Champlin, which is not exactly a hotbed of great food, but Q Fanatic is the exception. The restaurant was featured on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, which is a mixed blessing because media attention can create unrealistically high expectations. The pork back ribs were fantastic, and the two sauces on the table (Espresso BBQ and Honey BBQ) were also really, really good. The high quality ribs were smokey and cooked until the meat was easy to eat off the bone. I loved my side of Parmesan Potatoes Gratinee, which are thin sliced potatoes with caramelized onions and bacon in a dreamy creamy sauce. I also liked that they serve the sides in styrofoam cups and they have lids for easy portability, so you don't have to stuff yourself. I realize that the styrofoam is not exactly environmentally friendly, but it is convenient especially with kids who eat half of their meal.
If you go, go early because it gets busy fast. We showed up at 5:30 and there was already a line to the door. It is first-come, first served, order at the counter, and seat yourself. They serve unlimited refills of pop, and they serve beer. The decor is strip mall simple, and there is plentiful parking in the parking lot. If I had one suggestion it would be that they add outdoor seating. It would also be totally cool if they had a spot with a deck overlooking the Mississippi River, but maybe I should just be happy that we found a great rib joint and we enjoyed summer-like temperatures at the end of September.
