I am not sure how to describe how amazing this place is. I am not sure why there was not a line out the door to get in there. Maybe it is location? Off the main downtown drags. Maybe it is the name? Is it Japanese, Italian, what? We arrived at 7:00 pm and there were a whole two tables taken. By the time we left it was only about 1/2 full, but this place should be full and hopping every night of the week and especially on a Saturday night. With this is mind, we were a bit leery of what the food might be like. Luckily we went with instinct and decided to try a bunch of things. The bread which they did charge for was amazing, but it really was an appetizer with the dips so if you are trying to live really cheaply keep that in mind. They had a special small appetizer of salmon tartare which was not on the menu and was really cheap and it tasted great. The real appetizer was recommended by the waiter over the calamari only because you can get calamari anywhere and they always have them on the menu. I doubt these were like the calamari anywhere, but maybe I will find out next time. The duck and pork rillette was amazing. The fig jam perfectly complementing the savory pork and duck mixture and the blue cheese crackers were worth the price themselves. The salad was equally amazing. I have had versions of this salad many times and this one clearly came out on top. The apples were amazing, the cheese glorious and the walnuts plump jewels of sweetness. The Ribs were also outstanding. I was a little leery because I usually like the BBQ sauce the best about ribs, but these didn't have any. But it really did not matter the they had more flavor than any rib I have ever had. Some flavors were more prominent like the pepito pesto, other flavors like the horseradish which I think they must have been rubbed with was less forceful, but equally effective. And I think that was the beauty often with BBQ ribs the BBQ sauce if so overwhelming that you don't get a chance to taste the other flavors that may be involved. Just when I thought it could not get better, I tried for dessert. The coconut cream tart was brilliant. The flavors all melded beautifully along with the textures. I can not think of a better end to a meal. Sapor is very reminiscent for me of Goodfellows each dish has many different levels and flavors to tempt and tease the palate. The best thing is it is a literally half the price. Please if you are in the area stop in and try it. I do not want this restaurant to fail because people did not go there for whatever reason it is they don't. |
What can you say about Sapor that hasn’t been said? Supposedly, this is the best restaurant that nobody knows about. I can buy that, because it was only half full when we visited on a Saturday night. But if you've been to Sapor, you know what a gem it is. Neither of us were sure about paying for the bread plate. But after tasting the two breads and spreads, we realized it was worth the money. The same was true of the salmon tartare. Once again, we were happy with our decision. I was not a big fan of the duck and pork rillette, finding it a bit dry by itself. But with the fig jam and excellent specialty crackers, it was quite good. The autumn salad was awesome. I've never had candied walnuts that tasted that good. The chefs made the wonderful decision to substitute Honeycrisp apples for pears. The squash gnocchi was very good; the gnocchi was light and fluffy, though I found the squash a little too sweet for my taste. The dish was loaded with shitake mushrooms, which complimented the gnocchi, vegetables, and topped by terrific Parmigiano Reggiano. |
