This was a date night adventure, and I am thankful for that because it is still in its new restaurant very popular stage. Which it may remain in for a very long time, because the concept is quite good. All the food I had was well above average, the problem was the prices were too high. I know getting good seafood in the cities is a challenge, but still I think they could do better. However, it was packed and it was a Wednesday night so clearly if they can charge the prices and be packed then go for it.
It's been said that why pay for sit-down Smack Shack prices when you could go to the food truck for lunch or 1029 Bar for dinner? Maybe there's some truth to that. But then again, they were quite busy with happy hour and Twins post-game crowd on the day we went. The night was beautiful, and their outdoor tables looked inviting. This made me feel two things: this restaurant has struck a chord and will do very well, and the economy has to be picking up if they can fill up on a Wednesday night.
I had the lobster cioppino, which you can't get at the food truck. The red tomato was spicy by Minnesota standards and contained large portions of clams, mussels, shrimp, and grouper. Not to disappoint, there was also a nice lobster tail. All in all, a nice meal. The entree was simple to let the seafood stand out. However, on a future visit, I would probably go back to something less expensive because the lobster cioppino is one of the more expensive items on the menu.
I felt about the same with the lobster guacamole. It tasted fresh made that day, and it was fine. But adding lobster made it that much more expensive, and even before kids we would not normally spend that much on an appetizer. The Mississippi Mud Brownie was more in line price-wise. I really liked the brownie, marshmallow creme, and vanilla ice cream, but I thought that the chocolate ice cream should have been richer.
If you go, and you probably will if you're interested in hitting Twin Cities hot spots, go during a happy hour and stay through dinner. Service is good. Street parking is available within two blocks, and there is also valet parking available.
