I am not sure what to say about Sunset's. The only real redeeming part of the meal was the crab nachos. It was the special of the night and it was crab meat on a nacho chip covered in provolone cheese, which surprisingly worked well. Unfortunately all of the condiments, which thankfully were served on the side, were just your very basic bar and grill nacho sides, canned black olives, lettuce, tomatoes, and a very ordinary from the jar salsa. A bit disappointing for me. I will not even go into the coconut shrimp, which were recommended to me over the fish and chips by the waitress saying you can get fish and chips anywhere, but the coconut shrimp here are great. They were not and I am not sure if I would have faired much better with the fish and chips. Perhaps the point is Sunsets is simply a bar and grill, so I should not expect much more than I would any other bar and grill. But I still can't get over the fact that this bar and grill is in downtown Wayzata, one of the most affluent areas in the metro. Why do I expect more there? I don't know, but I do. |
If you enjoy going to Sunsets, please stop reading now. I was very disappointed with Sunsets. Somehow, I keep forgetting that a great view in a popular location does not equate to a great meal (see also Dock Cafe). Our crab nachos were pretty good. The cheese complemented, but did not overpower, the crab on the tortilla chips. The accompanying lettuce, tomatoes, olives, and sour cream were almost pointless; they added presentation and were hardly touched. The salsa tasted like a canned salsa, miles away from fresh salsa. The Caesar salad was the worst Caesar salad I've had in a long time. The dressing had little, if any, flavor. It coated the lettuce and detracted from the lettuce's natural flavor. The croutons were bland, stale chunks. I felt like I was five years old; I only ate enough of the salad to spread the remaining lettuce around to evidence that I had finished. The Linguini Gorgonzola wasn't any better. The andouille sausage lacked any spice whatsoever. After Renee tasted the dish, she remarked, "That doesn't taste like Gorgonzola." She was right - it tasted like processed cheese spread. I don't consider myself of food critic, nor the food police. For longtime I thought that critics didn't want to write bad reviews, and that's why they only went to better restaurants. Now I've changed my mind. I think that critics can't bear to go back three or four times to restaurants where the food is substandard. |
