Lightening quick service, tasty Vietnamese food, for very little money. That pretty much sums up Trieu Chau. We all had a version the bun (noodle salad) which was a nice and refreshing for the hot summer evening. Mine was the marinated chicken and it was perfect. Our sons share the meatball version and were fighting over the last meatballs, so I only got a tiny piece of one and I can attest they were really good. For the money this is about as good as it gets. Not really much more to say.
I have been to Trieu Chau for lunch, and was impressed enough to suggest going there for dinner. The lunch crowd is an interesting mix of business people and locals. When I was there for lunch I overheard two people discussing what sounded like a get-rich-quick scheme. When we went for dinner, it seemed like the kind of place where the service was fast enough to avoid that awkwardness of waiting for food when dining alone.
The ambiance is a repurposed chain family restaurant that's a hole in the wall in plain sight on University Avenue. It's incredibly maddeningly difficult to get to with the light rail road construction. But, it's cheap for lunch, and it's cheap for dinner. It's been around long enough that there was a good crowd the night that we visited even with road construction blocking easy access. With road construction, the easiest access is from Western Avenue and Aurora Avenue (getting there from Dale is through a few parking lots). Once you get there, parking in the lot behind the restaurant is plentiful.
The spring rolls were well made with a syrupy peanutty brown sauce. Serviceable and very cheap. The Bun Tom Nuong Grilled Shrimp Noodle Salad contained about a dozen good sized skewered grilled shrimp over a large bowl of noodle salad. Delicious. And cheap. I know that people get in ruts when going to their favorite Asian place on University Avenue, but Trieu Chau presents an interesting alternative when you're looking for some place different.
